In a significant military action, Ukrainian forces have employed long-range Storm Shadow missiles to strike a major Russian oil refinery. The attack occurred on Thursday, according to the country's military command.
Details of the Strike and Strategic Impact
The plant in question, the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, was reportedly hit, with "numerous explosions" recorded at the site. This marks another instance where Ukrainian forces has utilized these advanced British-supplied missiles to hit objectives on Russian soil.
Ukrainian officials emphasized that the Novoshakhtinsk facility serves as one of the primary providers of petrol products in southern Russia and is actively engaged in supplying the armed forces of the Russian Federation.
Political Discussions on the Conflict
In a related development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Thursday that he held productive talks with representatives of ex-President Donald Trump, namely Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The conversation focused on possible ways to end the war.
“We had a very productive conversation: numerous specifics, constructive proposals, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy stated on a social media platform. “There are some fresh concepts on how to move toward a genuine peace closer, and it concerns approaches, meetings, and, certainly, the timeline.”
Judicial Proceedings Inside the Country
Meanwhile, in a domestic matter, a Russian court has convicted a pro-war activist and critic of Vladimir Putin on charges of justifying terrorism. Sergei Udaltsov, leader of the opposition movement, was given to six years in prison.
The charges reportedly stem from an article Udaltsov shared backing another group of activists charged with forming a terrorist group. Udaltsov has denied the allegations as fabricated and, following the verdict, reportedly announced to go on a hunger strike in protest.
Foreign Prisoner Case
The Kremlin has stated it is engaged with French officials concerning the case of Laurent Vinatier, a French researcher currently serving a three-year sentence in Russia and reportedly facing new charges of espionage.
A spokesperson stated that Russia has made an offer to France in the case of Vinatier, and now “it is in France’s court.” French President Emmanuel Macron’s office confirmed he is monitoring the situation, with all government services working to offer assistance and push for his liberation as soon as possible.
Controversial Reopening in Mariupol
The Mariupol Drama Theatre, which was leveled in a 2022 Russian airstrike while hundreds of civilians were sheltering in its basement, is set to reopen. Russian occupation authorities have heralded the rebuilding as a sign of renewal.
However, previous staff from the theatre have denounced the planned opening as “dancing on bones.” The reconstruction is part of a wider Moscow effort to present its administration in occupied Ukraine, a process that includes the arrest or exile of dissenting voices and confiscation of assets from Ukrainian citizens.
It is expected to open by the end of the month with a performance of a classic Russian story, having been rebuilt almost from scratch over the past two years.
