As I enter the room, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and raw talent won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure was not a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his career in the game. Another challenge was his small stature, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

However, Génération Foot – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the training centre. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Season and Continental Breakthrough

This move set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to the title and earning player of the tournament.

A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his relatives support to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and On-Field Identity

Off-field noise aren't a concern for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and superb playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits he must to control his aggression, having been sent off early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals

At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Currently, his focus is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams as he aims to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the game.
