The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will End... At the Moment.
The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that Pluribus would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the hit series wrapping up—and a second season officially in the works—the writers' room opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
Anyone might to get swayed by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“It's like being an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's by design. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by audience chatter.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
The Big Question: Will the showrunner Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Given that Gilligan and his team are not listening by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… in a way.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a solid concept for a superior concept. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, one could always use the classics?
“I want Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
