Plans for Trump-Putin Summit Delayed Days Following Budapest Negotiations Announced

There are "no arrangements" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russia's Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has announced.

This past week the US president said he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Budapest soon to address the ongoing hostilities.

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the White House stated the two had had a "positive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was no longer "necessary".

The administration did not share further information on why the talks had been postponed.

Earlier Events

Trump had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit over the phone with the Russian leader, a day before meeting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports claimed his meeting with Zelensky had been a "heated exchange", with those familiar claiming Trump had urged him to cede extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Russia.

However, on this week the American president embraced a ceasefire proposal endorsed by Ukraine and European leaders to halt the conflict on the present positions.

"Leave it as is where it stands," he stated.

Russia has repeatedly pushed back against halting the existing front lines.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister said on this week, implying that pausing conflict would merely represent a short-term truce.

Diplomatic Positions

The "root causes" of the war required resolution, Lavrov emphasized, using Moscow's terminology for a range of comprehensive conditions that encompass the recognition of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the demilitarisation of Ukraine – a non-starter for Kyiv and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president stated conversations concerning the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to prevent dialogue.

He also said the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the supply of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

Putin's unscheduled call with the US leader last Thursday occurred before rumors that the United States was considering delivering extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could possibly hit deep into Russia.

Zelensky said it was the weapons consideration that had pressured the Kremlin to engage in discussion. The conversation concerning the missiles had emerged as a "significant input" in international relations", he commented.
