Monarch to Broadcast Personal Message on His Health Battle in Television Programme
His Majesty has filmed a personal message regarding his journey with cancer, scheduled for transmission as part of this year's Stand Up To Cancer drive, spearheaded by medical research organisations and a television broadcaster.
Official sources said the King would talk about his "recovery journey" as a person living with the disease, in a recorded address on Friday at 20:00 GMT.
The message, recorded at his London residence two weeks ago, will highlight the critical nature of cancer screening checks to increase the likelihood more people catch the disease at an initial point.
This will be a rare update on the health of the Monarch, who has been receiving ongoing care since his condition was announced in early last year. But it is thought unlikely the King will identify his type of cancer.
The Campaign's Core Mission
The annual charity campaign each year generates donations for scientific studies and therapies and prompts people to get health assessments to boost the odds of an timely detection.
The King's public discussion about his condition, and managing the disease, has been aimed to promote education and to persuade more people to get screened - and this will be escalated with this unusual royal involvement.
Up until now the King's primary strategy to his cancer has been to maintain his duties, maintaining a hectic timetable despite his regular rounds of therapy, and he is understood not to have sought to be defined by his diagnosis.
This year has seen the 77-year-old Monarch, taking several foreign visits, including to Italy and Canada, and hosting the largest volume of official guests to the UK for a generation, including the German president recently.
The Televised Special Show
This Friday's charity show on Channel 4, featuring well-known figures such as Davina McCall, Adam Hills and Clare Balding, will urge people not to be frightened of getting health screenings.
The hosts have been had experience with cancer - one host disclosed in November she had received treatment for a tumour, while Balding was diagnosed with thyroid cancer over a decade ago. Comedian Adam Hills has previously spoken about his late father, who had one form of cancer and then later blood cancer.
The show will target the roughly millions of people in the UK who charities estimate are not up to date with public health checks, with an online checker to let people see if they are eligible for screenings for breast, bowel and cervical cancer.
In an bid to explain screenings and illustrate the importance of timely identification there will be a real-time transmission from hospital departments at medical facilities in Cambridge.
"My aim is to remove the anxiety out of health checks and show all people that they are not on their own in this," said one of the hosts.
The Landscape of National Services
Right now in the UK, there are three national health screening services - for bowel, breast and cervical cancer - available to certain age groups.
A recently launched lung cancer screening programme is also being slowly rolled out for anyone at increased risk of developing the disease, specifically targeting people in a specific age bracket, who have a smoking history or used to.
Individuals may request prostate cancer checks, but there is lacking a standardised service operational.
Funding Research
The charity initiative, which has collected over one hundred million pounds since 2012, is supporting dozens of clinical trials with 13,000 patients.
King Charles, in a statement for dignitaries at a gathering for cancer charities in April, had discussed recognising the "intimidating and at times alarming situation" for those diagnosed and their loved ones.
But he stated his personal journey of coping with cancer had demonstrated that "periods of great challenge of illness can be illuminated by the greatest compassion," as he commended those who looked after those receiving treatment.
Royal representatives has not revealed the specific type of cancer the King has, or what treatment he has received. The King's cancer was identified after he had received a medical treatment.
