Israelis observe two-year anniversary of October 7th incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations advance
Israelis have assembled across the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The assault resulted in in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are considered accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"Our aggressive adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.
He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will never again present a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership delayed official remembrance events until 16 October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas assault was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was televised on Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was held around the country.
Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas representatives gathered in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a second day of third-party negotiations to review the terms of the agreement.
A senior representative involved in the discussions revealed that an late session of negotiations commenced at 7 PM local time.
The source explained the earlier meeting concluded without tangible results, amid disagreements over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the agreement.
He commented that the discussions are "tough and have not yet produce any significant progress," but pointed out that facilitators are striving to reduce the disparities between the two sides.
Key Points in Talks
- A lasting ceasefire
- The exchange of the captives still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance distribution
- Post-war governance of the area
Citizen Sentiment
In the city's Hostages Square previously, young Hagar - whose sibling survived the attack on the outdoor event, where hundreds were killed and dozens more were captured by Hamas militants - explained: "No location appears as home anymore and until each abducted person are released not a single person will be secure."
"When we see everybody home returned, we can relax again. Then we can start to heal," she continued.
Near the leader's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their backing for the families of the hostages. Israel says forty-eight continue in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be living.
Activist Atalia Regev stated: "We must do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to come back home. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."
Surveys now consistently show that around 70% of Israeli citizens desire the hostilities to finish in as payment for the liberation of the hostages.
Gaza Situation
At the location of the gathering, grieving people gathered to pay their respects.
From there, the noise of aerial bombardments and artillery could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers reported the heavy Israeli attacks carried on.
In Gaza City, bombardments were reported in the morning of that day in the western district, area and locality districts and in the east side area of that sector, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the evening comes, the dread arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing previously, described.
"My family are afraid of the attacks. All the night we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my smallest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."
"Every second we check the news to see the situation. And I'm worried that this truce will not be completed and that the conflict will resume to us."
Medical Crisis
The medical facility in Gaza City said it had received the remains of several people by the midday, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the south part area.
A different healthcare center in the south region of the city indicated another two fatalities had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli soldiers while looking for help to the south, medical staff said.
