Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs shared earlier today that show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the site of where the pictures originated relied on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a nearby apartment building captured in the video.
Locating additional structures, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
