Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel launched a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this lovable family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
